Things are “on the up” for one of the UK’s most progressive property developers, dandara, as they complete the acquisition of 4.4 acres of land at its proposed Chapel Wharf development site, off Chapel Street, Salford..
The acquisition of the Chapel Wharf site will result in Salford’s tallest residential building being built; a 40 storey landmark tower. It will also elevate dandara to the position of the largest developer in the Greater Manchester city core, with over 2,000 units currently under construction or with planning approval.
The redevelopment of the 4.4 acre brownfield site, which is in a prime location adjacent to the five star Lowry Hotel and fronting onto the River Irwell, will result in an impressive scheme of 990 luxury residential units. This will be the culmination of a regeneration process set in motion by Chapel Wharf Ltd in 1994.
Stirling Prize winning Architects Hodder Associates are the designers for the landmark 40 storey glass tower and the five other equally impressive smaller residential blocks that will lie adjacent to it. The deal itself was progressed and finalised between dandara, Chapel Wharf Ltd, together with adjoining land owners, including Salford City Council.
Peter Lackey, Managing Director of dandara North comments: “We are obviously delighted to have obtained this prime site. Over recent years, dandara has stepped up its development pace significantly and we are always looking to lead the way on delivering exciting design led schemes. Chapel Wharf will create not only landmark buildings for Greater Manchester, but also play a vital role in injecting sustainable development into the city’s derelict brownfield sites whilst creating new vibrant communities.”
The scheme is predominantly residential, with a mix of studios, one, two, three bedroom apartments and penthouses, with excellent prime commercial presence in the ground floor of the tower and other residential blocks. dandara will be showcasing its new ‘concept’ apartments at Chapel Wharf, with a new open plan layout which maximises useable living space by removing the hallway traditionally found in apartments, giving them a distinct Manhattan style feel.
Demolition and enabling works are now underway with construction due to begin spring of this year. Completion of phase one is expected in winter 2010.
