On Friday 8 September, The Mayor of Tunbridge Wells, Cllr Julia Soyke declared the new Town Square at Knights Wood officially open – with a little help from pupils of Skinners’ Kent Primary School.
The opening of the Town Square, which features a tranquil water feature and striking steel sculpture created by artist and sculptor Will Nash, was marked by a ceremony attended by local residents and businesses, plus teachers and Year Three pupils from Skinners’ Kent Primary School, at Knights Wood.
Susie Bennett, Sales and Marketing Director at Dandara, welcomed the Mayor and other guests to Knights Wood and explained,
This is a really important milestone for all of us involved in the creation of this fantastic development. There is already a strong sense of community at Knights Wood and I am sure the Town Square will help to strengthen this even further. I hope the residents of Knights Wood will thoroughly enjoy this peaceful space.
The Town Square features a stainless steel sculpture created by Will Nash, which stands 2.8 metres tall as the focal point of the long, shallow water feature. The sculpture includes intricate cut-out shapes of leaves, cones and other natural forms collected from the beautiful woodland that surrounds Knights Wood.
Speaking of his involvement, Will Nash said,
I am really pleased to be here at Knights Wood today, to mark the official opening of the Town Square. To accompany the sculpture, I ran a series of creative workshops with pupils from Skinners’ Kent Primary School and it is great to see them here today. I hope the pupils, residents and visitors to Knights Wood will enjoy the sculpture for many years to come.
Speaking of the school’s involvement, Gemma Faircloth, Headteacher of Skinners’ Kent Primary School said,
I would like to thank Dandara for providing such a fantastic project for our pupils to be involved with. Thank you also to Will Nash for your excellent creative workshops and for sharing your passion for art and design with our pupils, who will never forget the amazing opportunity you gave them.
Before declaring the Town Square officially open, The Mayor spoke of her previous visit to Knights Wood,
I originally visited the site many years ago, long before construction started and remember standing in what was just a field at the time. It is great to be able to return, to see how the site has been transformed into the fantastic development we see here today.
Professor Michael Holman of Water in the Wells, a community group that promotes the town’s water and spa heritage, said
It is exciting to see this vision realised. The Town Square at Knights Wood will be a central attraction not only for residents of Knights Wood but also for the people of Tunbridge Wells in general.
