Wanted – Runners for this year’s Wild West Dandara 5k

Hazlehead Park is hosting a hoedown this summer as the popular Dandara 5k and family fun day returns with a Wild West theme on Saturday, September 9, in aid of local charity group Friends of Hazlehead.

Runners can now register for the event, in its fourth year, with around 1,300 spaces available for youngsters and adults at the Dandara 5k, the 1k and 2k children's races and the 600m fun run.

Organisers Friends of Hazlehead and Sport Aberdeen are encouraging participants to don their Stetsons and cowboy shirts for the running festival, which supports the rejuvenation of the much-loved Hazlehead Park in Aberdeen.

Money raised in previous years has contributed to the creation of memory paths, regenerating the Queen Mother Rose Garden, the restoration of the fountain and towards the upgrading of Pet’s Corner, which is now home to Vader the giant python.

In addition, the funding has helped towards community events such as the annual Winter Wonderland in Hazlehead Park. The charity is also planning to re-sculpt the formal gardens and pathways and plans are in place for a new ‘trim-trail’ to be introduced later this year.

The Park, which at 180 hectares is one of the oldest and most historical properties in Aberdeen with ties to Robert the Bruce and Mary, Queen of Scots, recently received the Green Flag Award. Administered in Scotland by Keep Scotland Beautiful, the award is a benchmark for quality green space with applicants judged on whether the area is welcoming, safe, well-maintained and secure.

Gary Walker, director of the Friends of Hazlehead, said:

We are a group of local people who are completely committed to improving the facilities at Hazlehead Park, which is a truly unique place in the city and special to so many residents.

The Dandara 5k and family fun day is always a highlight in our calendar and we’re sure this year’s Wild West extravaganza will be fantastic, so we can’t wait to welcome runners of all ages and abilities to the park in September.

We’d like to thank Dandara for their continued sponsorship which allows us to make this event possible. We are also grateful to have the support of Sport Aberdeen who are helping us get ready for the day.

Dandara’s sales manager in Aberdeen, Peter Best, said:

Team Dandara always enjoy taking part in the 5k challenge at Hazlehead Park, it’s the perfect opportunity to get active and take in the beautiful surroundings.

We’re pleased to continue our support for The Friends of Hazlehead and look forward to seeing plenty of runners getting into the Wild West spirit on September 9 for what will surely be another great day out for all the family.

The starting gun will go off for the first race at 9.30am and the event will continue into the afternoon with catering and entertainment available for all the family including performances from Bon Accord Brass Band, face painting and a bouncy castle.

The first female and male winners of the 5k will be awarded £100 voucher for The Running Shop with second and third place runners receiving trophies. The top three male and female runners in the children’s 1k and 2k races and the first boy and girl to complete the fun run will be presented trophies, and there will be additional spot prizes awarded for best costumes.
