The V Building: Britain’s Tallest All-Residential Tower
Scheduled for completion in 2013, this is a stunning scheme, architecturally, soaring to over 150 metres and featuring over 600 private residential apartments and 60 serviced suites along with three premier restaurants and cocktail bars, a library, spa, leisure space and a rooftop observatory. All the apartments, from studios to three-bedroom apartments have been designed to maximise space, light and have breathtaking views. The development will be set in a new civic plaza, featuring fountains, lighting, patterned paving and specially designed street furniture.
Defining Birmingham's Renaissance
Externally, there is nothing quite like it. The V Building’s name is derived from its elongated ‘V’ shaped formation that is intrinsic to its external formation. Its scissor-like roof slices the sky with dramatic precision and thanks to its latticed cladding it sparkles and shines with reflective glass and warm grey metal. Its designer, the world-wide acclaimed architect, Eric Kuhne says that the intention behind its structural elegance is to give the "...same recognition that the Sears Building gave Chicago". Visually, something is always happening, whether you are looking upwards from the ground or watching the panorama of the city unfolding below you from the Observatory and Sky Bar - ‘a living room for the city’s people’.
Eric continues, “The V Building will be a new skyline element defining Birmingham’s renaissance as a twenty-first century city, standing testimony to the vision and leadership of the private and public partnership in Birmingham. It celebrates the idea of city living that is just beginning to take hold in Birmingham. And, tied to Victoria Square, it will become an integral part of a collection of civic buildings that celebrate the genius of Birmingham by introducing a graceful building to a muscular City.”
The Gateway to Paradise Street and Victoria Square
Standing at the gateway to Paradise Street and Victoria Square, within the Arena Central regeneration area, The V Building will be so much more than simply a place to live. It even demonstrates originality at external ground level, with a spectacular new collection of new landscaping and paving patterns; public art at its most intriguing. Here, illuminated, clear and frosted glass screens are used as necessary wind breaks and etched with the writings and musings of Birmingham’s literati to greet visitors on arrival. This unique ‘Poetry Garden’ provides a place to reflect and take pride in the city’s many achievements.
Sushi Bar and Signature Restaurant
The entrance Plaza is a grand, world-class 3,000 sq ft hotel-style lobby – to rival those in capitals all over the globe – Dubai, Miami and the best of Europe. At each end are two, distinct areas – one for residents use, one, a gateway to the building for the people of Birmingham. Express lifts will speed you to the core and the very pinnacle of The V Building with ground floor commercial areas, a trendy, coffee bar, and a first floor wine bar, sushi bar and a signature restaurant patronised by one of the UK’s ‘named’ chefs.
“Here, the lobbies will be open to all the people who live and work in Birmingham and will welcome guests and visitors from around the region. The bars and restaurants, reception rooms, lounges and galleries will all help create a new café society at the heart of Birmingham’s central business district,” comments Eric.
Leader of Birmingham City Council Mike Whitby, said: “The concept of The V Building has drawn unprecedented levels of interest from the property world, but vitally, it has also already captured the public imagination. Such an iconic structure proclaims the city’s confidence in its own future and with a respected developer such as Dandara and internationally renowned architect Eric Kuhne on board, we have the right team to transform the Birmingham skyline for the twenty first century.”
The V-Building - Iconic Architecture
Clive Dutton, director of planning and regeneration at Birmingham City Council, said: "This city is competing aggressively in the global marketplace to draw in increased opportunities and create wealth for its citizens. The emphasis in city centre based residential development is shifting to ensure the right mix of homes and uses is created to appeal to a wide market. In fact, recent research by Knight Frank has stated that only apartment schemes with a true unique selling point such as the iconic architecture which this scheme would deliver, can expect to succeed in the current market. The V Building is leading the way for us as a city to throw down the gauntlet and proclaim Birmingham as an international force to be reckoned with."
Martin Clancy, Managing Director of Dandara, said, “The V Building is quite simply, different to any other development, past or present, in
Birmingham; and will be a new destination for the people of Birmingham.”
