In celebration of Essex Day (26th October), housebuilder Dandara , who is currently building new homes at The Orchard in Little Dunmow, has donated 30 cowslip flower plugs to Little Dunmow’s Pre-School.
Known as the symbolic flower of Essex, the donation is part of Dandara’s wider campaign to celebrate the awareness day by distributing cowslips flowers to schools across the county. The campaign also aims to encourage biodiversity and deepening young people's connection to their heritage.
The origins of Essex Day are tied to St Cedd, the patron saint of Essex. His feast day on 26th October was later adopted as Essex Day, a county day celebrating local heritage, history and identity.
Steph Long, Owner at Little Dunmow’s Pre-School, commented: “Teaching our children about the local area as well as nurturing garden spaces is at the forefront of our learnings. The donation of cowslips from Dandara perfectly aligns with this and a great opportunity to expand our growing planters! It was great to see the excitement from the children taking part and we look forward to watching the plugs blossom in time for Spring.”
The cowslip plugs, known for their bright yellow blooms in springtime, will be planted in a large planter stand, consisting of five troughs, at the Pre-School.
Gemma Bannister, Sales Director at Dandara Eastern, commented: “It only feels right to partner with local schools by planting heritage flowers, as we celebrate the county where we build communities. As we build new homes across Essex, our passion for expanding the community is clear. However, to take this one step further, supporting a national heritage day is a fantastic opportunity to help teach the next generation the history of where they live.”
The planting at Little Dunmow’ Pre-School marks one of many nature-based donations Dandara is making across Essex to mark Essex Day and demonstrate its commitment to the local communities.
