Dandara’s Journey Towards Net Zero: Building a Sustainable Future

As environmental concerns take centre stage, housebuilders across the UK are being called to deliver homes that not only meet the needs of today’s homeowners but also protect the planet for future generations. We’ve risen to this challenge with an ambitious vision: achieving Net Zero and creating communities where people can thrive while minimising environmental impact. This commitment is reflected in Dandara’s first-ever Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report, spearheaded by Lesley Treacy, Head of ESG since September 2022.

Treacy sums up the company’s ethos perfectly:

“We’re building great places to live, work, and grow—while putting the welfare of our planet, customers, and staff first.”

Smart, Sustainable, and Energy-Efficient Homes

Dandara homes are a testament to our Net Zero ambitions. By integrating renewable energy solutions, smart technology, and sustainable construction practices, we can empower homeowners to reduce their carbon footprints and energy consumption significantly.
• Renewable Energy: From using 100% REGO-backed renewable electricity on construction sites and offices to piloting hybrid solar-powered generators, we are actively cutting down fossil fuel usage. These measures contribute to more environmentally friendly construction processes and pave the way for energy-efficient living.
• Smart Technology: Features such as smart thermostats, energy-efficient appliances, and advanced heating systems enable homeowners to monitor and control their energy consumption, leading to lower bills and fewer carbon emissions.
• Sustainable Construction: Innovations like integrated hard hat filter units reduce waste from disposable PPE while protecting workers’ health. Site workers also undergo extensive training to embed sustainability into every development.

Why New Builds Lead the Way

Recent data underscores the energy efficiency of new-build homes. According to the Home Builders Federation (HBF), the average new-build home emits 65% less carbon annually compared to older properties. While the latter emits 3.51 tonnes of carbon yearly, new builds average just 1.22 tonnes.

Additionally, 86% of new-build homes achieve an A or B Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, a stark contrast to the less than 5% of older properties that reach these standards. This energy efficiency translates directly into cost savings for homeowners, with new builds offering energy bills that are up to 65% cheaperthan those of older homes. The savings can exceed £1,980 annually, a crucial consideration given rising energy prices.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

Our commitment extends beyond environmental concerns to address social value and employee welfare, as outlined in its ESG report. Highlights include:
• Mental Health Support: We’ve trained 29 Mental Health First Aiders and committed to appointing one for every site. They also support the Lighthouse Club, a charity dedicated to construction workers’ mental health.
• Youth Engagement: Our Management Trainee Scheme helps school and college leavers gain career opportunities and degree-level qualifications in construction.
• Health and Safety Innovations: New equipment, such as integrated hard hat filters, not only protects workers from harmful dust exposure but also reduces waste, showing a dual focus on employee well-being and environmental responsibility.

Lesley Treacy remarked on the company’s progress:

“Through working collaboratively with departments across the business, great sustainable strides have been made in the design, construction, and operation of the new homes we build.”

A Vision for the Future

Dandara’s ESG report is just the beginning. With plans to double in size over the coming years and expand its reach from a regional to a national housebuilder, Dandara is setting new benchmarks for sustainability. CEO Trevor Dempsey emphasised the importance of our mission:

“We are striving to drive positive change to our environmental footprint and improve and support new and existing communities.”

The company’s journey towards Net Zero is not just about reducing emissions—it’s about creating a legacy of innovation and responsibility.

Empowering Homeowners

For prospective buyers, choosing a Dandara home means becoming part of a broader movement toward sustainability. Whether through reduced energy bills, improved air quality, or smarter living technologies, these homes represent a future-proof investment that aligns with environmental values.

With their focus on renewable energy, smart technology, and sustainable practices, Dandara is setting a powerful example in the industry. Their efforts ensure that both the planet and its people will benefit—not just today, but for generations to come.
