Planning approval has been secured for 272 new homes in Great Dunmow after Uttlesford District Council backed independent housebuilder Dandara’s latest application on Friday 21st November, marking a significant step forward for much-needed housing delivery in west Essex.
The development will be brought forward as a triple-tenure community comprising 109 affordable properties, 98 private homes and 65 private rented sector (PRS) units. This mix aims to widen local housing choice in a district where affordability pressures remain acute, and demand continues to outpace supply in the area.
Set on the edge of one of Essex’s most historic market towns, the scheme benefits from strong transport links. London can be reached in under 48 minutes from nearby Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted Airport stations, while key economic centres including Cambridge is within a 43-minute drive. The development also has easy access to the A120 and the M11.
Andrew Wickett, Managing Director for Dandara Eastern, said: “This approval is an important moment not only for Great Dunmow but for the wider Eastern region. We’re operating in one of the fastest-growing economic corridors in the UK. With Cambridge often referred to as the country’s Silicon Valley and major employment growth forecast along the Arc, communities across Essex and Hertfordshire are feeling the pressure of limited housing supply.
“Creating a mix of private, affordable and PRS homes means we can meet the needs of a far broader range of people, from young professionals to growing families and older residents looking to stay in the area. Great Dunmow has a strong local identity and a thriving high street, and we’re proud to be contributing to its future in a way that supports long-term regional prosperity.”
The town’s independent shops, bakeries and restaurants, combined with strong connectivity and access to major employment hubs, continue to make Great Dunmow an increasingly sought-after place to live. Dandara’s plans will now move into the next stage of technical design with construction work beginning the week of Monday 8th December.
