Manx Music, Speech and Dance Festival Cancelled

Organisers of the Manx Competitive Music, Speech and Dance Festival, sponsored by Dandara, have confirmed the cancellation of this year’s event.

The 2020 Guild was due to take place from 25th April – 2nd May 2020 at the Villa Marina. However, the duty of care the Guild organisers have to performers, volunteers, adjudicators and audiences, plus the travel restrictions caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, are the reasons behind the decision.

The planned 2020 theme, adult singing set pieces and drama topics will be used for the 2021 event so entrants are being encouraged to continue practising.

Festival chairman Anne Clarke said:

In this current climate, we feel it is not responsible to go ahead with the Guild next month. We really appreciate the support we’ve already received from the local community through entries, ticket sales and by sharing this year’s exciting programme of events far and wide. We'd also like to thank our main sponsor Dandara, without which the Festival would not be possible.

We will now begin the process of offering refunds for entry fees and ticket sales. If you are in a position to waive your refund and offer it as a donation to the Festival, we would be extremely grateful. Similar to other charities and event organisers in this position, this ongoing situation is going to have a huge impact and we need to stick together at this challenging time.

We hope everyone can understand why we've taken this difficult decision. In the meantime, and on a more positive note, we are pleased to announce that last year’s winners are welcome to retain their trophies for a further year! We will need them returned by the end of March 2021.

Dandara Managing Director Seamus Nugent said:

We are very sorry that this year’s Festival has been cancelled. It is hugely disappointing for everyone involved, including the performers who have been busy preparing, however we agree it is absolutely the right decision during these uncertain times. We are confident that the 2021 Festival will come back bigger and stronger than ever before

Performers who have submitted music for the accompanists can collect their music from St Matthew’s Church Hall in Douglas on Sunday 5th April or Monday 6th April between 2pm and 4pm.
