‘Back to the simple life. Back to nature’ – Metroland, by Sir John Betjeman.
In 1973, the area to the northwest of London was immortalised by the then poet laureate Sir John Betjeman, with his critically acclaimed Metroland film and poetry piece broadcast by the BBC. The name ‘Metroland’ may have slipped from the memories of many, but the rural idyll that it once described remains as true as ever.
Metroland was the name coined for the spur of green land originating from London Baker Street and Marylebone stations, fanning out from a finger of land bordering the original Metropolitan railway to the north west of London. The land covers what are now busy suburbs bound by the M25, and stretches out as far as Verney Junction in deepest rural Buckinghamshire.
From its inception the Metropolitan Railway retained the land bordering their railway lines with a far-sighted plan to develop the routes further afield, selling the infill land for new homes to property developers, and of course increasing the number of commuters using their line.
The vision between the war years was to promulgate the dream of a rural idyll for all with speedy connections into London, linking towns such as Harrow, Amersham, Chesham, and Aylesbury, as well as many smaller towns and villages in between. A range of new home styles playing to a heartfelt desire to live in ‘Chiltern Country’ were specially crafted, becoming widely recognised under a variety of terms including ‘rustic’ and ‘Tudor revival’!
The Grove at Haddenham is perfectly placed to enjoy all the benefits of living the ‘Metroland dream’, described as a new kind of Eden for those seeking to escape the hubbub of city life and choosing to enjoy the pastoral sublime within easy commuting distance of the capital.
