The Ultimate Guide On Help To Buy As Dandara Supports Welsh Home Buyers

The Help to Buy Wales scheme is a government initiative designed to assist prospective buyers in purchasing new-build properties by offering equity loans. With the support being beneficial for first-time buyers in particular, housebuilder Dandara is making homeownership more accessible by offering eligible properties under the scheme at its Golwg Gwendraeth development in Carway and Sant Silian in St Mellons.

In December 2024, the Welsh Government announced an extension of the Help to Buy Wales scheme, now expected to run until September 2026. Originally set to close in March 2025, the 18-month extension aims to provide continued support for homebuyers and the housing market. As England currently looks for alternative ways in which they can support first time buyers, Wales has provided homeowners an opportunity to get onto the ladder faster.

The scheme is eligible for first buyers or existing homeowners purchasing a new build home priced up to £300,000. A 5% deposit is required, but buyers will receive an equity loan of up to 20% from the Welsh government on the property’s value and will be interest-free for the first five years of their mortgage.

Sara Taylor, Sales Director at Dandara Wales & West, commented: “Help to Buy Wales has proven highly successful across our developments in Carway and St Mellons, with buyers taking advantage of the scheme to purchase their new homes with us. We anticipate this number will grow significantly with the recent extension which demonstrates the Welsh Government’s commitment to supporting people on their homeownership journey. We are proud to be a registered housebuilder playing a part in helping those take the first step onto the property ladder.”

The scheme has assisted over 14,000 households in achieving homeownership since being implemented in 2014[1]. The extension offers stability to 50 developers and small businesses registered with the program[2].

Lily, at Cascade Mortgages, commented: “Help to Buy Wales continues to be a brilliant support for first-time buyers. It not only makes homeownership more accessible with affordable repayments, but it also empowers buyers to purchase a home they can grow into, rather than settling for a short-term option.”

"Help to Buy Mortgage rates currently start from 3.87%, with Halifax offering some of the most competitive deals available.”
