Planning approved for accessible homes surrounded by ancient woodland in Elsenham

Independent housebuilder Dandara has secured planning permission from Uttlesford District Council to build 99 one, two, three, four and five bedroom homes, of which 40 will be affordable and available under Affordable Rent or Shared Ownership, at its Millers View development on Stansted Road in Elsenham.

The permission is for two separate parcels of land totalling 7.3 hectares, situated either side of Alsa Woods, an ancient woodland that will be protected with a 20-metre ‘no build zone’.

The development will see the creation of a new public open space nearby the ancient woodland helping to enhance the natural environment as well as a play area within this for both residents and the local community to enjoy. Additional features like the tree-lined and landscaped streets, as well as sustainable drainage systems will also add to the existing ecology and natural habitats.

The development will also include bungalows and 94 accessible and adaptable dwellings for wheelchair users or those looking for a future-proofed home – giving local older buyers a trendier way to downsize.

All the properties will be detached or semi-detached, with a garden and garage or parking space plus a minimum EPC rating of B thanks to a number of energy efficient measures such as PV solar panels, A rated boilers with heat recovery units, waste water heat recovery, increased insulation and electric vehicle charging points for each home – crucial for buyers in these times of rising gas and electricity prices.

John Baines, Land & Planning Director for Dandara Eastern, said: “This planning approval is a brilliant step forwards for our delivery of quality-built new homes in Essex, and we’re looking forward to starting construction at Millers View later this year. Our development will cater to local first time buyers looking to get onto the property ladder, as well as older people looking to downsize thanks to the large proportion of adaptable and accessible homes.

“Our residents will benefit from beautiful ancient woodland surrounding the development, as well as fantastic transport links which offer access to London in under an hour. We have seen a lot of interest already so expect it will sell fast when we launch off plan later this year.”

The north-west Essex village is located alongside the M11 motorway and just five miles from Bishop's Stortford city centre.
